SKILLS TRAINING FOR YOUTH FROM 1998 - 2000

The objectives of this program are:

To ensure that Youth (girls and boys acquire skills on the construction and production of building materials.
To ensure that at least 50% of the trainees are female.

Activities that WAT has co-ordinates:

Two training sessions with both theoretical and practical components on low cost building and construction skills.
Construction of a two room training centre and a ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine by youth during the practical phase training sessions
Production of building materials.
Preparation of project proposal on skills training centre and distribute to different donors.
Identification of local trainer.
Appointment of Community Development Officer to assist Regional Coordinator.
Preparation of site plan.
Construction of feeder road to the site.

Challenges to the skills training programme?

Shortage of funds.
Motivating girls to believe in their abilities to succeed in the construction sector.
Resistance from families, the community and potential employers towards girls being trained and working in the construction sector.
Lack of construction tools (due to cost) for self-employment after the training is completed.

Some Future Initiatives to be pursued:

Skills Training for Youth in order to train 40 youths per year.
Solicit funds for construction of a training centre and for continuation of skills training.
Produce final architectural drawings for the centre complex and process the building permit.
Production of building materials and housing construction.
