INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS SUB UNIT         

Objective:

To pilot informal settlement development to achieve security of tenure and improve housing and environment condition in cooperation with other local and external actors.

 WAT is working in informal settlements in the following areas: -

   Security of tenure

   Housing improvement

   Waste management awareness

   Community project

 Activities

bullet WAT has been mobilizing communities improve their social economic well being of their lives through community initiatives.
bullet WAT has been sensitising communities in the informal settlements areas to improve their environment through solid waste management project
bullet WAT has been mobilizing the communities to regularize their settlements

 Achievements

bullet WAT in collaboration with UCLAS Consultant managed to conduct a Needs Assessment Study of Housing Improvement in Hannanassif Ward. The area is llocated in Kinondoni Municipality about 3 km. from the City centre.

The ward has three sub wards, but WAT concentrates on two wards for now, which are Mkunguni and Hannanassif.

The Feedback Workshop on the Needs Assessment study conducted at Msimbazi Centre on 12/09/2003, where by 43 Hannanassif residents participated has been formulated a small committee for follow of activities

Meeting conducted with Hannanassif residents to discuss about the idea of small project they proposed in the feedback workshop. Nursery School was the project which chosen out of the several  ideas proposed.

Committee of four people were chosen to make a follow up of area to establish the school.

 

 Future Plans

To create awareness to Hannanassif residents regarding security of tenure.

To mobilise group(s) for security of tenure issues and housing upgrading.

To mobilize people to do group survey.

To sensitise and encourage Hananasif members  to save through WAT SACCOS.

To assist  the community in planning and coordinating upgrading project of their houses.
