ALL ABOUT WAT

WAT was established to promote the advancement of women through education, skills training, research, information dissemination, seminars, workshops, production and distribution of informational booklets, fliers and brochures and by encouraging self-reliance among women.

WAT was established on July 28, 1989 as a non-governmental, nonprofit organization.

Vision

By the year 2015, low income people in Tanzania will have their living conditions improved.
Mission

To promote the advancement of women through education and training in human settlements and other related issues.

Objectives          

To empower Low and Middle income communities particularly women to participate fully and effectively in all aspects of human settlements development.

To create public awareness on women's rights, especially regarding rights to land and shelter.

To encourage self-reliance among women.

To raise the level of general education among women.                                                               

To fight for gender sensitive policies and laws.

To create awareness among women on laws which give them rights to own land and property (such as the Land Laws of 1999 and the Marriage Act of 1971) and on existing procedures which contribute to the advancement of women.

To create awareness on HIV/AIDS.

To implement the Habitat Agenda as agreed upon at the international conference held in Istanbul, Turkey, 1996.
 

WAT major focus is on Human Settlement Development.

WAT has three Units:

  1. Housing Development Unit
  2. Information Communication, Advocacy and Lobbying unit
  3. General Administration and Finance Unit

Nationally

WAT is a member of: 

  • The Tanzanian Association of Non-governmental Organizations (TANGO) 
  • The South African Human Rights NGOs Network - Tanzania Chapter (SAHRINGON - TZ) 
  • The Gender Land Task Force 
  • The NGO Coalition on the formation of the new NGO policy 
  • The Task Force on NGOs who formulate Tanzania's shadow report on CEDAW 
  • WAT is the member of FEMACT, HAFOTA, KIKUHAMI
  • WAT is the Coordinator of the Task Force on the Secure Tenure Campaign 

Regionally
  • WAT is a member of African NGO Caucus (Africaucus) 
  • WAT is a member of the Settlement Information Network Africa (AFRICA) 
  • WAT is a member of FEMNET 

Internationally

WAT is a member of the Habitat International Coalition (HIC) 

  • WAT was the Global Secretariat of the Habitat International Women and Shelter Network (HIC -WAS) 

WAT is a member of Huairou Commission

 

HIC - WAS Secretariat 

The Women and Shelter Network is a collection of organizations that recognize the particular struggle of women in accessing land and housing. Member organizations support and work with low income communities in all areas of human settlements. 

The mission of the Network is to unite, promote and support women and their organizations in the development of human settlements that improve women's and communities' quality of life.
